Short Bio:

João Caraça obtained the D. Phil. in Nuclear Physics at the University of Oxford (1973) and the Agregação in Physics at the University of Lisbon (1974). He is Senior Advisor to the Board of Administration of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He has been Director of the Delegation in France of the Foundation from 2012 to 2016 and Director of the Science Department of the Foundation since 1988. He integrates the Steering Committee of the European Forum on Philanthropy and Research. As Full Professor of Science and Technology Policy at the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão of the University of Lisbon, he coordinated from 1990 to 2003 the M.Sc. Course on Economics and Management of Science, Technology and Innovation. From 2017 to 2020 he was the President of the Conselho Geral (Governing Board) of the University of Coimbra. He was a member of the Governing Board of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) from 2008 to 2012. He was also President of the Advisory Board of the Portuguese Business Association for Innovation – COTEC (2003-2011). He was a member of several science and Technology Foresight High-Level Groups at the European Commission since 1990. João Caraça was Science Adviser to the President of the Portuguese Republic from 1996 to 2006. He has published over 200 scientific papers. His main interests are in science and innovation policies, strategic foresight studies and in the history of knowledge and culture.
