Short Bio:

Jüri Engelbrecht (born 1.08.1939), Dipl. Eng. (1962), PhD (1968), and DSc (1981) in Mechanics. Joined the Institute of Cybernetics in 1969 (Tallinn University of Technology) and founded the Centre for Nonlinear Studies (1999-2015), now professor emeritus. His main scientific interest is in mathematical physics: nonlinear wave motion, complexity and coupled fields, modelling of nerve pulse dynamics, he has authored several monographs in these fields. President of the Estonian Academy of Sciences (1994–2004), Vice-President (2004-2014), now an adviser. President of ALLEA (All European Academies) for 2006–2011, he was also a member of the ESF Governing Council and a member of the EASAC. From 2013 on, he is a Trustee of the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS). His activities in science policy are reflected in his numerous papers and essays, mostly published by ALLEA and WAAS.
