Human rights have been the drivers for global political, economic and social progress progress since the dawn of the Enlightenment and with increasing speed and force during the last two centuries. The ideals of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights have now been transformed into specific political goals and measurable targets. This session will examine the process of social evolution by which abstract concepts acquire the power to transform society. It will look forward to anticipate the next stage in social progress and the steps that can be taken now to accelerate and facilitate a smooth transition from past to future.
